Chapter 18

“What’s her name again?” Alice’s voice echoed from behind the toilet.

“Ashley,” I said for the sixth time. We’d been deep cleaning Suzy’s house for the past two hours. Right now we were in the bathroom where I was wiping the mirror and Suzy was cleaning everything chrome.

Alice had volunteered to clean the base and back of the toilet. Mostly because I offered to pay her a dollar. She crawled out and dropped the dirty paper towel in the garbage. “Do you love her?”

It’s not like I hadn’t asked myself the same question, but having someone else say it almost made me choke.

Did I like her? More than I’d ever liked any other woman. Was I in love? Probably, but I wasn’t about to say it out loud and jinx the whole thing.

Suzy came to my rescue. “Alice, it’s only their third date. People don’t fall in love at first sight like in the cartoons.”

Alice had been grappling with the reality of another woman having my attention. She folded her arms across her little chest and glared at her mom. “You and dad did.”

Alice had Suzy there. From the first time they’d seen one another, Suzy and Jerome had both known they’d get married and have a family. It had taken them a long time to act on it, but they’d eventually come around. They’d probably thought they’d spend the rest of their lives together. The thought sent a pang of sadness through me, but I pushed it aside and turned to Alice. “Let’s say I have a crush on her.”

“Why?” She’d obviously been practicing her scowl.

Here’s where the twenty years of experience I had on her came in handy. I knelt down in front of her and said, “Why do you have a crush on Kyle?”

Alice’s medium dark skin flushed, and she looked away. “I dunno.”

“Come on, tell me one reason.” I counted this as warm up for when she got into her teens. When Suzy and I had decided we might lock her in a tower for a few years. Rapunzel’s mother wasn’t as crazy as we’d all thought.

Alice made a face. “I like his hair.”

That was pretty weak, but I could work with it. “I like Ashley’s hair too. It’s big and red.”

“That can’t be the only reason you have a crush on her.” Alice pointed at me.

“Why else do you have a crush on Kyle?”

Alice’s eyes narrowed.

“It’s hard to explain, isn’t it?” I said.

After a moment my niece’s expression softened. “I guess.”

I straightened and patted Alice’s head. “She’s nice. I like spending time with her.” I looked at Suzy, unsurprised to find a mischievous grin on her face. “Are we finished?”

She made a show of looking around before she answered. “We are.”

“Good. I need to go back to my place.”

“Do you need to get cute?” Alice asked me.

“Exactly.”

A few hours later I stood in Suzy’s kitchen, stirring alfredo jerk sauce as Suzy had the girls set the table. I’d decided to risk being seen in Suzy’s “Sexiest Cook in the Kitchen” apron in case the sauce, or anything else, decided to attack me.
